At Shoham, we are committed to ensuring that all shipments comply with international freight regulations. One of the most crucial requirements for shipping cargo with wooden packaging materials is compliance with ISPM 15 standards. To maintain a seamless shipping process and avoid potential delays, all wooden pallets and crates must be heat-treated according to International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15) and bear the appropriate certification stamp.
What Is ISPM 15?
ISPM 15 is an internationally recognized regulation designed to prevent the spread of pests and diseases through wooden packaging materials. This standard applies to all solid wood packaging used in international trade, including pallets, crates, dunnage, and other wood-based packing materials.
To comply with ISPM 15, wooden packaging must undergo one of the following approved treatments:
- Heat Treatment (HT): The wood must be heated to a core temperature of at least 56°C (132.8°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Methyl Bromide (MB) Fumigation: The wood is treated with a fumigant to eliminate pests (less commonly used due to environmental concerns).
Why Is ISPM 15 Compliance Important?
Failure to comply with ISPM 15 can lead to serious shipping issues, including:
- Cargo rejection at ports of entry
- Quarantine or fumigation costs imposed by customs authorities
- Shipping delays and additional fees
- Fines and penalties for non-compliance
To avoid these complications, we require that all wooden pallets and crates used for cargo transportation be properly heat-treated and stamped with the ISPM 15 certification mark.
How to Ensure Your Cargo Meets ISPM 15 Standards
To ensure smooth shipping operations, we recommend the following:
- Verify Certification: Always source wooden packaging materials from suppliers who provide certified ISPM 15-compliant pallets and crates.
- Look for the Stamp: The ISPM 15 mark should be clearly visible on each treated wooden item. This stamp indicates that the wood has been treated in accordance with international regulations.
- Use Alternative Packaging: If possible, consider using plastic, metal, or composite material pallets and crates to bypass ISPM 15 requirements.
As experienced freight forwarders, we are dedicated to making international shipping as seamless as possible. By ensuring that all cargo meets ISPM 15 requirements, we help our clients avoid unnecessary delays, fines, and regulatory issues.
